Biking in Copenhagen

Introduction: Getting a bike in Copenhagen is not just an option; it’s practically a rite of passage for anyone studying or living in this vibrant Danish city. I remember vividly that, on the third day of my arrival, I decided it was time to embrace the two-wheeled lifestyle. So, one of my suitemates and I embarked on a mission to explore the local bike shops.

Picking the Right Bike: We visited three bike shops in Copenhagen, including Swapfiats and another one whose name eludes me now. However, after some research and conversations, we ultimately chose ABC Cykler, the bike shop that DIS mentions. After some rough estimates we found this one to be the best for the budget. Especially since you can get your family and friends a bike if they visit included in the rental package!

Yes, getting a bike in Copenhagen does come with a price tag (a little less than $200usd), but trust me, it’s worth every krone. The rental is typically for the entire semester, which, considering the convenience and freedom it offers, is an investment that pays off manifold. To enhance safety, I opted for a helmet, which was available for a bit extra. While most Danes don’t wear helmets, I personally prioritize safety. I’d rather feel a bit silly with a helmet on than risk being unsafe (and my parents would be mad if I didn’t wear one lol).

Biking in the City: Once I had my trusty bike, it quickly became an inseparable part of my life in Copenhagen. I used it extensively when the weather was warmer, and even now, as the chilly winds begin to creep in, I continue to rely on it for my daily adventures: for example, this morning I biked to Juno the Bakery with my suitemates (highly recommend).

Living in the heart of the city and not possessing a commuter card, I often utilize my bike for in-city travels instead of opting for the metro, which would cost me money. It’s not just about saving expenses; it’s about immersing myself in the city’s vibe, experiencing the streets, and savoring the sense of freedom that comes with pedaling your way through the city. I would go on bike rides with no particular destination in mind and explored the city in the most organic way

Tips and Tricks: Copenhagen’s flat terrain is a biking paradise. The absence of steep hills means that you can glide effortlessly from one place to another, taking in the stunning architecture, green parks, and the bustling life of the city. Here are some tips for biking. For turning left and right you simply signal with your hand what direction you plan to turn. Hold your hand up to signal you are stopping. When you want to turn left at intersections you signal like you are stopping, you cross the lanes and join the biking lane going straight that should be at a stop. Although it might take time to get use to the hand signals, and I am not sure if I explained it very well. The best way to find out is biking! Don’t worry you’ll become a pro in no time.

Conclusion: So, if you find yourself in Copenhagen, don’t hesitate – get yourself a bike. It’s more than just a mode of transportation; it’s a ticket to feeling like a part of the Danish culture, a key to exploring the city’s hidden gems, and a commitment to the unspoken, yet universally understood, language of bike lanes and bell rings that make up the city’s heartbeat. Your Copenhagen adventure truly begins when you embrace life on two wheels.
